Orwell Arts

Orwell Arts opened in May 2007. A former primary school building on 3 levels, it has been refurbished and had an extension added ensuring Disability Discrimination Act compliance.
Orwell Arts replaced the Horne Terrace premises which had been in operation for over 30 years.
Pottery
Work is produced by coiling, modelling or throwing on the wheel. Items are also made with slabs and on moulds. Glazes are made up in the workshop and work is fired to stoneware, raku and enamel finishes.
Glass
Different aspects of glass work are undertaken including cutting and soldering. There is also a glass kiln for firing glass work and creating glass sculptures. Printed cards are produced using member’s designs and photographed work.
 Weaving
A range of woven goods from machine and handspun wools are produced. The products include knotted rugs, cushion covers, wall hangings, rucksacks, scarves, table runners, rag rugs and tapestries. Members work on their own individual loom, following a piece of work through from start to finish.
Painting
Individual and group painting sessions are available. There are community resources regularly accessed such as Museums and the Botanic Gardens that are used as an inspiration for drawing. Members are supported to develop their creative art skills using a variety of different mediums, and may also enrol on art courses at colleges.
