Since 2001 Garvald Edinburgh has run an exciting programme of exhibitions in a variety of settings. These have showcased the tremendous quality, diversity and warmth of work being produced by the artists in our workshops.
Past shows have included ceramics, glass, paintings, puppets and textiles and have been held at the Fletcher Building in the Royal Botanic Gardens, Paterson SA at Commercial Quay, the Traverse Theatre Café Bar, Edinburgh Filmhouse and the National Museum of Scotland.
The artists are given the opportunity to be involved in the complete process of producing, selecting and hanging work, gaining confidence and self- esteem as a result. Great emphasis is placed on displaying art and quality craft in a professional, contemporary manner as we aim to challenge preconceptions about the capabilities of adults with learning disabilities.
An opening or private view is always held to share and celebrate the work with the artists, their family, carers and friends and is an opportunity for the artists to experience the interest in their work. All work exhibited is for sale and all sales go towards the continuation of the Exhibition Programme.
Individual artists or workshops can be commissioned. If you would like to find out more or commission work please contact our Exhibitions Co-ordinator on 0131 516 2761.
There is real warmth in the community, and a really nice atmosphere – It quite uplifting really! The best thing about being a volunteer at Garvald is that you get more out of it than you can ever put in. The members teach me as I help them – each thing is beautiful and unique in its own way.
