In Memory of Jack Reed

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Jack Reed, the founder of Garvald Edinburgh. 

In 1969, Jack created Garvald Edinburgh from scratch, beginning with a community house and, through decades of vision, dedication and hard work, transforming it into the vibrant organisation it is today. Garvald Edinburgh now operates five-day services and a retail space across Edinburgh and Dalkeith, providing a unique and welcoming community for our members and staff. 

Jack’s commitment extended far beyond Garvald Edinburgh. He supported the wider Camphill community, rooted in Rudolf Steiner’s anthroposophy, and helped fund projects such as Columcille and Engine Shed in their early days. His generosity, vision and belief in the value of community made a lasting contribution to many people and organisations. 

Without Jack’s vision and dedication, Garvald Edinburgh would not be the place it is today. He created more than an organisation he helped build a vibrant, united and deeply committed community where people could belong, contribute and flourish. 

On behalf of all our members and staff, we would like to express our deepest condolences to Jack’s family, friends and all those who knew and loved him. 

We are immensely grateful for everything Jack gave to Garvald and for the lasting legacy he leaves behind.
